Program Overview

    Introduction

The Bachelor of Science in Health Information Technology (HIT) is a comprehensive undergraduate program designed to prepare students for the dynamic intersection of healthcare, information management, and technology. This field focuses on the acquisition, analysis, protection, and exchange of health-related data using specialized hardware, software, and healthcare enterprise systems. Health information professionals serve as vital bridges between clinical, operational, and administrative functions, ensuring that patient health information is complete, accurate, secure, and accessible to authorized users.

The curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills in health data management, information systems, coding and classification, healthcare statistics, privacy and security regulations, and health informatics. Students learn to manage electronic health records (EHRs), code diagnoses and procedures using standardized classification systems (ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT), analyze health data for quality improvement and research, and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Graduates are prepared to work in hospitals, clinics, physician offices, long-term care facilities, insurance companies, government agencies, and cancer registries.

- Demonstrate proficiency in healthcare data content, structure, standards, and governance, including health record documentation and classification systems.

Within the next decade, the Health Information Technology program aspires to produce graduates who meet the growing demand for skilled health information professionals in Iran and globally. As the health sector continues to expand and technology plays an increasingly critical role in healthcare delivery, our graduates will be prepared to take on essential roles in managing the digital transformation of healthcare, contributing to improved patient outcomes, enhanced quality of care, and more efficient health systems. The program envisions its graduates as ethical leaders and innovators in health informatics, capable of addressing emerging challenges in big data, cybersecurity, and health information exchange, and advancing healthcare both nationally and internationally.

    Mission (Core Purpose)

The mission of the Health Information Technology program is to educate and train competent, ethical, and innovative professionals who can responsibly manage, analyze, protect, and use health information to advance healthcare and serve the community. The program aims to train individuals capable of managing health information technology departments in healthcare institutions, providing information required to support patient rights, institutional accountability, and personnel needs through proper health information documentation, supplying information for educational and research purposes, and applying information technology effectively in health information management.

    Curriculum and Clinical Training

Students engage in a structured program of 130 total credits, including general education, basic sciences, specialized health information courses, and clinical externships. Clinical training takes place in affiliated hospitals and healthcare facilities, where students gain hands-on experience in health information departments. The program emphasizes professional ethics, lifelong learning, and adherence to national and international standards for health information management. Graduates are eligible to sit for national certification examinations and pursue careers in health information technology or further specialization in health informatics, health information management, or related graduate programs.
