Financial Aid and Scholarship Opportunities

A Guide for Prospective International Students in the General Medicine Program

This document provides a comprehensive overview of the financial support opportunities available to prospective international students applying to the General Medicine Program at Shahroud University of Medical Sciences (SHMU). We recognize that pursuing medical education abroad requires a significant investment, and we are committed to offering clear and transparent guidance regarding available financial support mechanisms.

Commitment to Merit-Based Support

SHMU is dedicated to attracting the most talented and motivated students worldwide, regardless of financial background. To support this commitment, the University offers merit-based scholarships specifically designed for international applicants entering the General Medicine Program.

Eligibility and Structure:
All international applicants are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Eligibility is primarily determined by demonstrated academic potential, performance on standardized tests, and alignment with the rigorous requirements of the medical curriculum.

The financial support provided through these scholarships is offered as a direct reduction of the annual tuition fee.

Renewal Policy:
Scholarship awards are initially determined at the time of admission. Renewal for subsequent years (Years 2 through 6) will be specified in the formal Award Letter. Generally, continuation is contingent upon maintaining a high Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in accordance with standards set by the Medical Faculty and the Scholarship Committee. Failure to meet these academic standards may result in discontinuation of the scholarship for future years.

Application and Review Process

Scholarship applications are integrated into the general admission review process.

Concurrent Review:
Scholarship requests are reviewed alongside the admission application. Applicants typically do not need to submit a separate application for scholarship consideration, provided they indicate their interest and submit all required documentation through the initial application portal. Any additional documents specifically requested for scholarship evaluation will be communicated during this phase.

Funding Availability:
Scholarship funding is limited and subject to annual budget approval by the University Board for the corresponding academic year. If the number of qualified applicants exceeds the available funds, selection is highly competitive, with priority given to candidates demonstrating the highest potential.

Merit Assessment Criteria

The selection committee evaluates applications based on multiple factors, including:

  • Academic Excellence: Performance in pre-medical coursework, final grades, and overall academic trajectory, with an emphasis on consistency and curriculum rigor.

  • Standardized Test Scores: Results from recognized international tests; higher scores strengthen scholarship consideration.

  • Research and Publications: Evidence of prior engagement in scientific research, laboratory work, or peer-reviewed publications (where applicable).

  • Extracurricular Leadership and Service: Demonstrated leadership, community service, and commitment beyond academic obligations.

  • Personal Statement Quality: Clarity regarding goals, motivation to study Medicine at SHMU, and demonstration of professional attributes.

Student Financial Responsibility

Even when awarded a partial tuition scholarship, students remain fully responsible for all non-tuition expenses, including:

  • Health insurance

  • Accommodation

  • Travel expenses

  • Visa processing fees

  • Student activity fees

  • Books and essential medical equipment (e.g., stethoscope)

  • Other non-tuition-related costs

A detailed estimate of annual living expenses (which vary by city and lifestyle) will be provided in the official Acceptance Package. International students must demonstrate proof of sufficient funds to cover these expenses for the first year before final enrollment is confirmed.

Payment Installments:
Information regarding installment plans, structured payment schedules, or deferrals (if available) will be provided upon issuance of the official Admission Letter and Financial Contract. These options are subject to institutional policies and are not guaranteed prior to acceptance.

Final Considerations

Awarding a scholarship is competitive. Receiving an official Acceptance Letter to the General Medicine Program does not guarantee financial support, even if the applicant is deemed eligible. All applicants must meet the program’s admission requirements, independent of scholarship considerations. Financial aid decisions are made separately, though reviewed concurrently, with academic merit.
