Traveling by bus is a common and cost-effective way to move between major cities in Iran, including the route between Tehran and Shahrood. To ensure a smooth journey, please consider the following tips, tricks, and security advice based on local practices:

I. Planning and Purchasing Your Ticket (Before the Ride)

1. Online Booking (The Modern Option)

  • Requirement: Successful online booking often requires a valid Iranian bank account/debit card or the use of a trusted third-party service.
  • Advantage: If accessible, it allows you to secure your seat in advance, especially useful during peak travel seasons, and bypasses potential queues at the terminal.
  • Crucial Step: If you book online, you must ensure you receive a confirmed, traceable electronic ticket/reference code. Sometimes, even with an online reservation, you may still need to exchange this reference for a printed ticket at the terminal counter before boarding. Always confirm this requirement when booking.

2. In-Person Booking at the Terminal (The Traditional & Reliable Option)

This remains the most straightforward and universally accessible method for all travelers:

  • Location: Go directly to the official ticket counters  inside the main bus terminal corresponding to your route (e.g., Beyhaghi Terminal for routes heading northeast).
  • Process: You communicate your destination and desired travel class (e.g., VIP or regular) directly to the clerk.
  • Advantage: You can verify the bus’s condition, ask questions about the route directly, and receive your printed ticket immediately.
  • Security & Insurance: Insist on the printed ticket. This ticket serves as your proof of purchase and is essential for insurance coverage in the unlikely event of an incident.

2. At the Ticket Counter:

  • Destination & Route: Clearly state your final destination (e.g., Shahrood”).
  • Departure Time: Be cautious with stated departure times. Buses may wait until they are sufficiently full, potentially leading to an extra hour of waiting. Check how full the bus already looks before committing.
