Traveling by Train: Comprehensive Guide to Purchasing Tickets
Traveling by train (RahAhan) is often preferred for longer journeys due to increased comfort, stability, and generally better safety standards compared to buses.
1. Online Booking (The Primary Method for Trains)
Unlike bus tickets, the online system for Iranian railways is generally more accessible and encouraged for international travelers, though it still presents hurdles:
- Official Platforms: The primary booking platforms are the official websites of the railway companies (e.g., Raja, Fadak).
- Passport Requirement: For foreigners, booking typically requires entering your Passport Number during the reservation process. This step registers your travel details officially.
- Payment: Similar to buses, payment usually requires a valid Iranian payment gateway. International credit cards are NOT accepted. You will likely need assistance from a friend, colleague, or a university contact with an Iranian bank card to complete the transaction.
- Confirmation: Once paid, you receive a confirmation code. For many modern trains, this code can be used directly at the station (with your passport) for printing the final ticket, but confirming the need for prior printing is always wise.
2. In-Person Booking at the Station
If online booking assistance is unavailable, you can purchase tickets directly at the main railway stations:
- Location: Visit the ticket counters inside the main Tehran Railway Station .
- Process: You must clearly state your destination (e.g., Shahrood) and the desired class (e.g., standard service or a premium company like Fadak).
- Requirement: You must present your Passport to the clerk for ticket issuance, as passport details are mandatory for train travel registration.
- Advantage: This guarantees you receive a physical ticket immediately and confirms your seat is secured without relying on external payment systems.
Summary Note for Students:
For train travel, securing assistance for the initial online booking is highly recommended as it offers more choice in train type and departure time. However, the in-person method remains a reliable backup, provided you have your passport ready.
