Program Structure and Duration
The MBBS program is a 5.5-year undergraduate medical program consisting of three integrated educational phases:
Phase I – Pre-clinical Sciences (2.5 Years)
The first phase provides a comprehensive foundation in basic and biomedical sciences. Students study subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology, and other fundamental disciplines that form the scientific basis of medicine. Practical laboratory sessions and integrated learning prepare students for clinical education.
Phase II – Pre-clinical Medicine (1 Year)
This phase bridges basic sciences and clinical practice by introducing the principles of disease mechanisms, diagnosis, and patient management. Students strengthen their clinical reasoning and communication skills while preparing for hospital-based education.
Phase III – Clinical Clerkship (2 Years)
During the final phase, students receive supervised clinical training through rotations in SHMU's affiliated teaching hospitals. They gain hands-on experience in Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Emergency Medicine, and other major specialties while developing professional competence, ethical responsibility, and patient-centered clinical skills.
Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree and are entitled to use the courtesy title "Dr."
Medium of Instruction
The official language of instruction is Persian. To ensure academic success and effective communication during clinical training, international students participate in a preparatory Persian language course before entering the main medical curriculum. The course includes general Persian, medical terminology, academic communication, and clinical language skills.
Clinical Training
Clinical education takes place in Shahroud University of Medical Sciences' affiliated teaching hospitals under the supervision of experienced faculty members and medical specialists.
