Environmental and Occupational Research Center (EORC)
Safeguarding Health Through Integrated Environmental and Occupational Research
Welcome to the Environmental and Occupational Research Center (EORC) at Shahroud University of Medical Sciences (SHMU). Our center is strategically focused on the critical intersection where the working environment impacts human health. We are dedicated to advancing the science and practice of keeping the working population healthy, safe, and productive by developing robust, evidence-based strategies to mitigate risks stemming from both occupational hazards and broader environmental exposures.
Our Mission:
The EORC’s mission is to conduct rigorous, interdisciplinary research that translates directly into safer working conditions and reduced disease burden for the workforce. We strive to be a leading national and international hub for innovation in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health, and Occupational Medicine.
Key Areas of Focus:
Our research endeavors are structured around four interconnected pillars:
Hazard Assessment and Mitigation: Comprehensive identification and control strategies for physical, chemical, biological, and psychosocial stressors in diverse workplace settings. A core component involves detailed monitoring of environmental contaminants specific to industrial and service sectors.
Work-Related Disease Epidemiology: Conducting prospective and retrospective studies to understand the etiology, prevalence, and long-term impact of occupational diseases, including musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory conditions, and occupational cancers linked to environmental factors.
Ergonomics and Human Factors Engineering: Researching the optimal design of work systems, tools, and environments to promote physical and cognitive well-being, minimize fatigue, and prevent acute/chronic injuries.
Policy, Surveillance, and Intervention: Utilizing collected data to inform public health policy, establish regulatory standards, and design effective, scalable workplace health intervention programs.
Opportunities for International Students & Collaborators:
The EORC offers a dynamic, research-intensive environment perfect for international students and visiting scholars looking to make a tangible impact in occupational and environmental health fields.
Interdisciplinary Projects: Engage in complex, multi-faceted projects that combine clinical, engineering, and public health methodologies.
Practical Exposure: Gain hands-on experience through fieldwork, including exposure assessment, workplace risk audits, and the validation of new safety technologies.
Global Contribution: Contribute to research efforts that directly impact international best practices for worker protection and environmental sustainability in industry.
The Environmental and Occupational Research Center (EORC) is committed to creating a future where work is inherently safe and healthy for everyone.
