Ophthalmic Epidemiology Research Center (OERC)

Advancing Global Vision Health Through Epidemiological Research

Welcome to the Ophthalmic Epidemiology Research Center (OERC) at Shahroud University of Medical Sciences (SHMU). Our center is at the forefront of studying the prevalence, incidence, and risk factors of eye diseases across populations. We are committed to generating the evidence necessary to prevent avoidable blindness and improve the quality of life for millions.

Our Mission:

The OERC’s mission is to conduct rigorous, large-scale epidemiological studies to understand the determinants of visual impairment and eye health. We strive to translate this knowledge into effective public health policies, targeted screening programs, and evidence-based clinical practices both locally and internationally.

Key Areas of Focus:

Our highly specialized team—including ophthalmologists, optometrists, biostatisticians, and epidemiologists—focuses research efforts on these critical areas:

Population-Based Eye Surveys: Conducting extensive studies to estimate the burden and distribution of major eye diseases (e.g., cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy) within various demographic groups.

Risk Factor Analysis: Identifying and quantifying genetic, environmental, lifestyle, and occupational factors that contribute to the onset and progression of ocular disorders.

Preventive Strategies: Evaluating the effectiveness and cost-efficiency of population-level interventions, such as screening programs and health education campaigns, aimed at preserving vision.

Modeling and Forecasting: Utilizing advanced statistical methods to model disease trends and forecast the future needs for ophthalmic care resources.

Opportunities for International Students:

The OERC offers a unique research setting for international students and scholars interested in vision health, public health, and biostatistics. It’s an ideal place for those pursuing postgraduate degrees (MSc and PhD) or seeking collaborative research projects.

Engage in Large-Scale Data Analysis: Work with extensive datasets from major population-based studies, providing invaluable training in advanced analytical techniques.

Receive Specialized Mentorship: Collaborate with globally recognized experts in ophthalmic epidemiology and clinical research.

Contribute to Global Health: Your research can directly inform public health efforts to combat vision loss worldwide.

Join the OERC to use the power of epidemiology to protect the gift of sight and make a significant contribution to global vision health.
